Editing 3.3:Upload articles

If you select an AmCAT project you are directed to the project page. This is the place where your project article sets are stored. You can choose to list either your 'Active Sets', your 'Archived Sets' or 'Coding Job Sets' by clicking on these tabs (see Figure 5.1). AmCAT displays your archived sets by default, listing all the AmCAT project article sets you have archived. This list is empty for a new user, but you can easily upload a new project article set.

To '''create a new article set''', you go to the AmCAT home page and click on the ''''Manage Projects'''' button. Select the AmCAT project for which you want to upload a new article set by clicking on the project name. In the upper left corner you find the button ‘Add article set’. Clicking on this button displays a dropdown menu with the options ’Upload articles’ and ‘New Empty Set’. 

'''‘New Empty Set’''' adds a '''new articleset without uploading any articles''' into it. This is useful in case you want to '''add articles to AmCAT from an outside source''', such as from a scraper or through R. If you want to '''add articles directly from within AmCAT''', it is not necessary to create an empty set first. Instead, choose ''''upload articles''''.

‘Upload articles’ directs you to new page with a list with '''several options for different text formats''' that can be uploaded. Most of these are project specific, but Plain Text, LexisNexis and CSV can be used easily by all users. You can select the format that applies to your AmCAT project by clicking on the format name.

== Uploading your own texts ==

As the above table shows, one of the options is to '''upload Plain Text files''', either '''one by one''' or '''together as a set''', compressed into a .zip file. After '''selecting the format option 'Plain Text'''', from the list of uploaders you are directed to a form where you have to '''specify the metadata''' for your articles. If you have already created an article set, you can choose it from in the scroll down field right to 'Articlesets', and '''add the article(s) to this existing set'''.  If you want to '''create a new article set''', leave this field empty. Instead, '''enter the name of your new article set''' in the field right to ''''Articleset name''''. Similarly, you enter the medium, headline, date and text of your own article in the associated fields. When the information you want to include is complete, click the ''''Upload' button'''. You will be directed to a page where your own article is being uploaded. After your article has been uploaded successfully, you can take a look at the new set you have created by clicking on the ''''View Set' button'''. Repeat this process for all of your own articles you want to add to the new article set. 

== Uploading one of the other text formats ==

If you select '''one of the other text formats''' (e.g., LexisNexis or CSV), the upload procedure is slightly different. Select the format that applies to your AmCAT article set, and '''select the relevant file''' on your computer. Again, if you have created article sets in AmCAT before, these will be listed in the scroll down field right to 'Articlesets'. You can '''select an existing article set''' in which you want to save your new articles. However, if you are '''creating a new article set''', you don't select an article set in this field, but you can enter the '''name of your new set''' in the field right to ''''Articleset name''''. Name your article set, select the '''encoding''' and click on the 'Upload' button. You are directed to the page where your file is being uploaded into your AmCAT project. After your article has been uploaded successfully you can take a look at the new set by clicking on ''''View Set''''. 


Let's discuss an example using the '''LexisNexis''' (newsarticles) text format. You go to academic.lexisnexis.nl to select the news articles of interest. You select the desired 'Date' and 'News sources' and fill in your search term. LexisNexis presents you with the selection of requested articles. You save the articles by clicking on the disk logo in the upper right corner. A new window pops up with the 'Download Document' options. Make sure to select the 'Text' in the 'Format' box, as you should save the articles in LexisNexis as a txt.file. In addition, you check 'Cover Page' at the 'Page Options'. Click on the 'Download' button and save the file under a chosen name on your computer. To upload the newly saved document(s) with your selection of news articles into AmCAT, you select the 'LexisNexis' format in the 'Opload Articles' page, click 'Bestand kiezen' and browse to the LexisNexis file(s) on your computer. You can also download the articles from LexisNexis as a Zip-file, which is a great option if you need to download a lot of articles from LexisNexis (you can only save 200 articles per saving from LexisNexis).
